The smart technology revolutionising how we live

Smart products are more popular than ever in our homes as we look for instant solutions to everyday tasks. Apps on our smart phones and tablets help us control household technology in ways unimagined only a few short years ago.

Research carried out for the recent Smart Home Week has revealed 43 percent of people have at least one smart product in their home, up from 27 percent only a year ago.

And 64 percent of us have spent money on smart technology in the last 12 months, with 42 percent of people forking out at least £100 for the privilege.

Average spend on products expected to rise

Meanwhile, almost nine out of 10 people questioned for the study (88 percent) said they expected to spend at least 10 percent more next year on smart technology, while 60 percent said they’d go smart when replacing conventional equipment. The average spend is expected to go up by 30 percent.

Smart technology ranges from being able to record TV on your satellite or cable box remotely to flicking on the heating from an app while you’re on the bus home to your fridge automatically adjusting its temperature to suit its contents. Smart speakers will play your music of choice when you ask them.

And smart hubs from big names such as Amazon and Google will put your vacuum cleaner to work, call you an Uber cab and even answer any question you are pondering – within reason.

Technology at our fingertips

With all that technology at work monitoring your every move, it’s no surprise that 62 percent of those quizzed for the Smart Home Week research said they are worried about the threat of hacking using their smart technology.

However, there is a high level of understanding about how smart home products work. Almost half of those questioned said they were familiar with how these products work and their benefits.
