UK’s city slickers fancy a life by the sea
City slickers are looking to swap urban life for the coast. New research from estate agent listings site Zoopla says homeowners in the likes of London, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Cardiff are looking to the seaside to escape city living.
And the resorts they’re most keen on include Margate, Swansea, Skegness and Scotland’s north-east coast of Angus.
Zoopla analysed thousands of property searches on its site over the last year to find out the most-searched-for areas for people living in the UK’s 10 largest cities. A home by the sea was appealing to the residents of four of those cities.
Margate tops list for Londoners
For Londoners, topping the wish list is Margate, now dubbed Shoreditch-on-Sea for its appeal to the capital’s residents. The average house price in the Kent resort is £231,506, a quarter of the average London price of £804,500.
The Guardian recently described Margate as “Kent’s Copenhagen-like capital of cool, where you can go to a major art gallery, swim in a scenic tidal pool, dine on Nordic cuisine and shop for designer homeware – without the flight”.
Liverpudlians are looking across the country to the Lincolnshire resort of Skegness, long famous as the site of the first-ever Butlin’s. You can snap up a property in “Skeggie” for an average and affordable £168,010.
Cardiff and Swansea might be near neighbours and rivals in football terms through their respective City clubs. But residents of the Welsh capital clearly fancy becoming Swansea Jacks with a move along the south wales coast, according to Zoopla. A home in Swansea costs an average £173,673.
For Edinburgh folks, life in Scotland’s capital may be good but possibly not quite as good as living in Angus, the north-eastern region that stretches from Dundee to Aberdeen and includes towns such as Open golf favourite Carnoustie.
Dream move within reach
Zoopla’s analysis showed that Birmingham residents are attracted to Droitwich; Mancunians fancy Wallasey; Bristolians are mad for Bath; Glaswegians are looking to Lesmahagow; those living in Newcastle are pining for Peterlee; and in Sheffield, they want to have their Pontefract cake and eat it.
