Want a happy home? Buy a bungalow

There are fewer of them being built today, but bungalows are still one of the most popular types of property to buy. And a recent survey suggests there’s a good reason why one-storey homes are so coveted.

According to the survey, those who live in a bungalow are the happiest homeowners in Britain with half of the 2,000 homeowners quizzed (51 percent) say they were happy with their home.

The survey was carried out by online estate agent Tepilo.com. Nine out of 10 homeowners who took part in the questionnaire said they were happy with their home.

While bungalow owners are the most content, it is no surprise to note the next happiest homeowners are those who have a detached property (41 percent), followed by those who live in a semi-detached home (37 percent) while 34 percent of flat dwellers gave their property the thumbs up.

Location still the key to contentment

The least happy homeowners are those who have a terraced home with only a third of them (33 percent) saying they were happy in their home.

The factors that most affect homeowners’ contentment are their property’s location (62 percent), size (46 percent), layout (35 percent), parking (35 percent), natural light (32 percent), good neighbours (26 percent) and low running costs (24 percent).

Issues that make homeowners disgruntled at their property include a lack of storage space (19 percent), dated kitchens (16 percent) and tired bathrooms (14 percent).

Tepilo estimated that UK homeowners would have to spend an average £21,376 to transform their home and up the happiness factor.

Transform a home for greater joy

TV presenter Sarah Beeny, who founded Tepilo, said: “Happiness is such a subjective place to find, but we all know that home really plays a big part of the equation.

“As a nation, we tend to prioritise home ownership, and this research reveals that owning a home is a real source of happiness for most, which is great to see.

““The figure we’d need to spend to make us even happier is fairly high, but new bathrooms and kitchens can really transform a home, so these types of improvements are usually worth the investment required.

“And for those without big budgets available, it’s great to see that most people feel happiness can be upped with a big comfy sofa, a fire and pictures of family and friends, all things that are easily achievable, even on a budget.”
